Fall 2017 was the tenth bi-annual MHacks event at the University of Michigan. As part of the design team, I worked on the website design and logo design for the hackathon.
MHack's origin logo (see below) has had a presence in all the previous iterations -- for my initial drafts, I considered severing that tie and going in a completely new direction.
We eventually turned back to the original M shape to keep the branding related to years previous, however, I updated the outline to include the 'X,' effectively merging the two letters and using multiple gradients to dictate the reading order.
I chose a high-contrast palette with glowing, vibrant colors. I used multiple transparencies to mimic the effect of light. The pinks and purples also subvert the traditional 'tech' colors, yet still give off a modern, clean energy.
The inclusion of different opacities worked well in the web design's hierarchy. The brand was also extended to signage, stickers, t-shirts, and other swag items at the event.
